Healthcare (HC) 5.0 conditions and use cases create demands addressed to Information and Communication Technologies, particularly mobile networks. This paper confronts HC 5.0 service requirements with the current state-of-the-art 5G System (5GS) and future 6G System (6GS) whose standardisation has only just begun. There are technological barriers to implementing extremely-high-data-rate and very-low-jitter HC services in 5GS, but more importantly, legal barriers for mobile operators (“Network neutrality”) and common market strategy (focus on mass consumers and delayed deployment of network slicing support causing disappointment to industrial customers). 6GS has the technological potential to support HC 5.0 depending on the mutual synchronisation of 6GS and HC 5.0 development roadmaps. Examples of ETHER, 6G-PATH and ELIXIRION projects show how research initiatives contribute to the creation of specific 6GS enablers for HC 5.0 support. |
