Abstract:

Europe’s transition toward interoperable and sovereign data ecosystems drives the digital transformation of several sectors and requires practical solutions for automated and efficient cross-sector data sharing. Especially in the energy sector, such ecosystems can contribute to innovation and resource optimization by facilitating collaboration between organisations and researchers. This paper evaluates the DATAMITE framework as an enabler for automated, secure, and standardised energy data exchange within the context of an energy Distribution System Operator's (DSO) network operations. Through a pilot involving a DSO and an energy service provider, we demonstrate how DATAMITE supports end-to-end processes, from data ingestion and quality validation to anonymisation, harmonisation, policy definition, and publication to an Energy Data Space catalogue. Eight validation scenarios are implemented to test the framework's capabilities to support the process of preparation and sharing of data products through an Energy Data Space. The results showcase substantial reductions in manual effort and time-to-consumption, while improving data product compatibility and governance, compared to previous workflows and underscore the DATAMITE framework's role in enabling scalable, trustworthy data exchange and supporting the improvement of energy efficiency in the sector.
