Smart Manufacturing Meets Data Spaces: A New Paradigm

Belesioti Maria, Diakoumakos Jason, Chochliouros Ioannis

Abstract:

Data is a critical asset in today’s world. As the global data environment is rapidly evolving with substantial proportion of internet data to be machine-generated, the extensive volumes of real-time industrial data have the potential to improve operational efficiency and to drive innovation enabling transformation in the manufacturing landscape. This paper examines the role of data as a key driver of economic growth within the European data economy, highlighting the strategic vision behind the European Strategy for Data. It explores the concept of data spaces as decentralized, trusted ecosystems that enable secure and sovereign data sharing across sectors. Additionally, it outlines key initiatives such as IDSA, DSSC, and Gaia-X. Finally, it explores the EU funded project SM4RTENANCE which is designed to exploit cross-sector manufacturing assets to deploy a data space federation that will enhance collaboration within the industrial ecosystem strengthening data sovereignty.
