The integration of digital twin technologies and interactive 2D design tools has the potential to transform smart building modeling by increasing accessibility, efficiency, and precision. This paper introduces Grid4Space, an easy-to-use grid-based design tool to create 2D floor layouts for digital twin applications. Unlike traditional 3D modeling methods, which frequently require specialized knowledge and expensive equipment, Grid4Space provides an intuitive drag-and-drop interface that allows users to design structural layouts, specify room functions, and seamlessly incorporate domestic appliances. The solution prioritizes user privacy by storing data locally, which ensures security and eliminates the need for external servers. This study compares Grid4Space to traditional design approaches such as manual sketching, CAD software, and 3D scanning, highlighting its usability, cost-effectiveness, and versatility. The technology is particularly well-suited for smart building design and retrofitting, as it promotes energy-efficient solutions and improves digital twin creation. Our results show that Grid4Space greatly enhances the design workflow, making smart environment modeling more accessible to a wider range of users. Future work will concentrate on improving its capabilities to include real-time simulation and IoT integration to enable dynamic smart building management. |
